What to Expect on Roof Installation Day in Baldwin County

Knowing what will happen on roof installation day makes a roof replacement much less stressful. B&B Roof & Gutter is based in Spanish Fort and installs roofs throughout Baldwin County, Mobile County, and surrounding Gulf Coast communities. Most homeowners do not need to manage the crew or understand every roofing detail, but you should know how your property will be protected, what happens after the old roof comes off, and what you should expect before the job is considered complete.

Before Roof Installation Begins

Before construction, B&B confirms the roofing material, color, and project schedule. We also review property protection so the crew knows where vehicles, landscaping, outdoor furniture, driveways, gates, and other areas around the home need special attention.

  • Roofing material and color confirmation
  • Schedule confirmation
  • Property-protection review
  • Access and staging plan for materials and debris

1. The Existing Roof Is Removed

For a complete roof replacement, the existing roof covering is removed so the roof deck underneath can be inspected. Tear-off also allows the crew to see problems that cannot be evaluated accurately while old roofing materials are still covering the structure.

2. We Inspect the Roof Deck

Once the old roofing is removed, the crew inspects the visible roof decking. If rotten or damaged decking is discovered, B&B identifies the problem before covering it with the new roof system. This is an important stage because the new roofing system depends on a sound surface underneath it.

3. FORTIFIED Fastening and Sealing When Applicable

When the project is being built to the FORTIFIED Roof standard, the deck attachment and sealed-roof-deck requirements are completed and documented at the required stages. The goal is to strengthen the roof deck against high winds and reduce water intrusion if the roof covering is damaged during severe weather.

An independent FORTIFIED Evaluator handles the designation process. B&B performs the roofing work and coordinates with the evaluator, but we do not certify our own installation.

4. The New Roofing System Is Installed

The exact roofing system depends on the materials selected for the home. B&B installs architectural shingles, including Atlas ProLam™ roofing systems, as well as standing-seam metal roofing.

For an Atlas shingle system, the roof can include matched starter and hip/ridge components, synthetic underlayment, the selected shingles, and the fastening details required by the project specifications.

5. Required Installation Stages Are Photographed

FORTIFIED projects require documentation at specific stages of construction. Those photos matter because important parts of the roof become impossible to inspect after the next layer is installed. B&B documents the required stages and coordinates with the independent evaluator so the installation can be reviewed for designation.

6. Cleanup and Magnet Nail Sweep

A roof replacement creates a significant amount of debris. At completion, the crew removes roofing debris and performs cleanup around the property, including a magnet sweep to help collect loose roofing nails around appropriate areas of the jobsite.

7. B&B Performs a Final Quality Inspection

The roof is not considered finished simply because the last shingle or metal panel is installed. B&B performs a final quality review of the completed work. On a FORTIFIED project, the evaluator documentation and designation process also continue after construction.

What Happens After a FORTIFIED Roof Is Installed?

After the required documentation is submitted and the home receives its FORTIFIED designation, homeowners should provide the designation to their insurance agent to determine whether their policy qualifies for a wind-mitigation discount. If the project is being completed through the Strengthen Alabama Homes program, the program’s current process and payment requirements also apply.

Your Roofing Warranties

B&B provides a 5-year workmanship warranty on our roofing installation. That warranty is separate from the roofing manufacturer’s material warranty. Manufacturer coverage depends on the products and roof system installed and is governed by the manufacturer’s written warranty terms.

For homeowners receiving an Atlas ProLam system, B&B provides the applicable Atlas warranty documentation so you can see the manufacturer coverage that applies to your roof.

How Long Does Roof Installation Take?

Installation time depends on the size and complexity of the roof, weather, decking repairs, material choice, FORTIFIED requirements, and other project conditions. Many residential roofing projects can move quickly, but B&B will give you the expected schedule for your specific project rather than promising that every roof takes the same amount of time.

What Should Homeowners Do Before the Crew Arrives?

  • Move vehicles away from the immediate work area when requested.
  • Secure or move fragile outdoor items near the home.
  • Make sure gates or access areas discussed with the project team are available.
  • Let the team know about pets, irrigation systems, delicate landscaping, or other property concerns.
  • Expect construction noise and vibration while tear-off and installation are underway.
  • Ask questions before work begins if anything in the scope or schedule is unclear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be home during my roof replacement?

Not necessarily. Coordinate access and any project-specific needs with B&B before construction. Because roofing work is noisy, some homeowners prefer to be away during the busiest part of installation.

What happens if damaged decking is found?

B&B identifies visible damaged decking discovered during tear-off and explains what needs to be corrected before that area is covered by the new roofing system.

Who certifies a FORTIFIED roof?

An independent Certified FORTIFIED Evaluator documents and submits the project for designation. The roofing contractor does not issue the designation.
