How to Compare Roofing Quotes in Baldwin County, Alabama
If you have three roofing estimates sitting on your kitchen table, comparing only the total price can hide major differences in what each contractor is actually providing. A roofing quote should tell you what roof system is being installed, how the work will be documented, who is responsible for the project, what warranties apply, and what happens if there is a problem after the crew leaves.
B&B Roof & Gutter is based in Spanish Fort and works throughout Baldwin and Mobile Counties. We encourage homeowners to compare our proposal line by line with other roofing bids. If another contractor truly matches the scope, materials, installation standards, documentation, and warranty for a lower price, that is useful information. The goal is to make sure you are comparing the same job.
1. Compare the Written Scope, Not Just the Bottom Line
A single total at the bottom of a page does not tell you enough. Ask each roofer to identify the major parts of the roofing system and the work included in the price.
- Roofing material and exact product line
- Tear-off and disposal
- Roof-deck inspection and how damaged decking is handled
- Underlayment
- Starter and hip/ridge components
- Flashing and roof penetrations
- Ventilation
- Cleanup and nail removal — see our roof installation day guide for the full process
- Permit or inspection responsibilities when applicable
- Workmanship and manufacturer warranties
2. Ask Who Will Actually Manage Your Roofing Project
Find out who owns the job once the contract is signed. B&B uses a dedicated project supervisor on our roofing projects. Ask competing contractors whether one person will be responsible for your job and who you should call if a question comes up during construction.
3. Compare Roofing Materials as a Complete System
Do not compare bids based only on the shingle brand printed at the top. Ask which shingle, starter, hip and ridge, underlayment, fastening pattern, ventilation components, and other roof-system materials are included.
B&B installs systems including Atlas ProLam™ architectural shingles and standing-seam metal roofing. The exact materials used depend on the roof system selected for the home.
4. If You Are Considering FORTIFIED, Compare Experience and Documentation
A FORTIFIED Roof is not simply a different shingle. The installation has specific requirements for deck attachment, sealing, ventilation, roof edges, documentation, and independent evaluation.
Ask each contractor:
- Are you qualified to perform the FORTIFIED work required for this project?
- Who takes the required installation photos?
- Who coordinates with the independent FORTIFIED Evaluator?
- How do you make sure required stages are documented before they are covered?
- What happens if documentation is missing?
5. Understand the Workmanship Warranty vs. the Manufacturer Warranty
These are not the same warranty.
Workmanship warranty: covers the contractor’s installation according to the written terms of that contractor’s warranty. B&B provides a 5-year workmanship warranty on our roofing installation.
Manufacturer warranty: comes from the roofing-material manufacturer and depends on the products, complete system, installation requirements, registration, exclusions, and written warranty terms.
Ask every roofer to provide both in writing before you sign.
6. Verify Licensing and Insurance
Ask for the contractor’s license information and current certificate of insurance rather than relying on a logo or statement on a proposal. B&B’s Alabama Home Builders License is #30993, and B&B carries insurance for our roofing operations.
7. Look at Reputation You Can Verify Yourself
Read recent reviews, look at completed work, and verify third-party credentials directly. B&B encourages homeowners to check our Google reviews, BBB profile, manufacturer credentials, and local project history rather than simply taking our word for it.
8. Ask What Happens When Storm Damage or Insurance Is Involved
If the roof was damaged by a storm, ask what the roofing contractor will actually do during the claim process. A contractor can inspect and document damage, provide a construction estimate, meet with an adjuster when appropriate, and provide legitimate documentation for omitted construction items. The insurance carrier determines coverage and payment under the homeowner’s policy.

9. Ask About FORTIFIED and Strengthen Alabama Homes Before Choosing a Bid
For eligible Baldwin and Mobile County homeowners, the Strengthen Alabama Homes program may provide up to $10,000 toward eligible FORTIFIED mitigation work. If you are participating in the program, you will compare contractor bids as part of the process, so understanding differences in scope and FORTIFIED experience is especially important.
Roofing Quote Comparison Checklist
- Is the complete scope written down?
- Are the exact roofing products identified?
- Is the fastening/installation method explained?
- Who supervises the job?
- Who handles required documentation?
- Is the contractor licensed and insured?
- What is the written workmanship warranty?
- What manufacturer warranty applies?
- If FORTIFIED is involved, who coordinates with the evaluator?
- Are cleanup, disposal, and final inspection included?
- Can you verify recent local reviews and completed projects?
The Lowest Roofing Bid Is Not Automatically the Wrong Bid
Sometimes another contractor will be less expensive. Ask why. If the lower proposal matches the roofing system, scope, documentation, project management, credentials, and warranties line for line, then you have a meaningful comparison. If it does not, the difference in price may simply represent work or protection that is missing from the scope.
